Shining success at darc night

Solely voted for by designers from 1400+ practices worldwide, receiving a darc award can certainly be described as a special accolade to be proud of. Each year sees the presentation of the peer-to-peer prizes take place at darc night, an atmospheric party in a unique venue in London populated with a series of light installations from collaborations between manufacturers and lighting designers, each creating inspirational interest.

Taking part for the first time in 2017, LED Linear™ were partnered with dpa lighting consultants and, supported by specialist sales partner Architainment, were delighted to win Best Installation on the Night for “Helios”.

With inspiration drawn from a geodesic dome kit supplied to all participants, dpa quickly settled upon the concept of rotating the structure through 90 degrees and using LED Linear’s flexible design light line VarioLED™ Flex VENUS RGB to create visual interest. Over the next few weeks it was decided to present a simple graphic representation of the sun and the sea, a recurring motif since childhood for dpa designer Veronica Lykou. Using over 38 m of Venus presented on a precisely calculated frame, animation and control of movement over a 90 second show was provided by Pharos TPC1 feeding two ISTL iDrive® Thor 36 units very ably programmed by Architainment.

Commenting on the win, dpa said: “The concept was quickly conceived as all three of us loved the idea of using simple graphic lines of light to evoke an emotion, very much like neon but with the added benefit of full color control. We had a clear vison of what we wanted to achieve but to see it all come together so incredibly well was just amazing and very much down to a great team effort between ourselves, LED Linear™ and the team at Archtainment – thanks guys!”

Helios will next be shown at darc room, a creative lighting exhibition at London Design Festival, taking place from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd September at B1, Victoria House, in Bloomsbury London, where LED Linear™ will be showing their leading range of high quality linear LED lighting solutions on stand 009.
