The Doshi Retreat extends the Vitra Campus with a quiet place of withdrawal. Designed by B. V. Doshi together with Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, the architecture follows the idea of a spatial journey: a gently winding, subterranean path leads gradually to the Gong Room. Corten steel and carefully controlled lighting shape the atmosphere while guiding perception and movement. During the day, the retreat nearly merges with the landscape. At night, it reveals itself only through a soft, warm glow.

The lighting concept by Licht Kunst Licht AG is based on linear LED technology with concealed integration and uses the VENUS True Color IP67 as a key element throughout the project. More than ten meters of the 3D-version were installed and carefully embedded flush within the ground and the structural build‑up of the winding path. The luminaires follow curved, organic geometries and are integrated without visible fixing points, serving simultaneously as guidance, orientation, and spatial structure. Operating at a constant color temperature of 2200 K, the light harmonizes with the warm tones of the Corten steel, creating a gentle amber shimmer that supports low luminance levels and smooth transitions between illuminated and dark zones. In the Gong Room, linear light paths define the circular spatial boundary and contribute to a calm, indirect base illumination that is reflected by the surrounding brass ceiling. Throughout the retreat, the VENUS True Color IP67 enables precise light control while remaining visually discreet and robust in its construction.

The result is a lighting concept that goes far beyond functional illumination, using light as a narrative medium for guidance, introspection, and resonance. Subtle, restrained, and deeply integrated, the lighting reinforces the retreat’s meditative character and demonstrates how architectural lighting can create presence through restraint rather than spectacle.
